When paths are crossed-lives are
changed! Let us help you cross paths with another culture.
Join Thailand Service Corps (TSC) today for a rewarding,
memorable and enjoyable life experience.
Live, work and serve Thai
people as a Thailand Service Corps team member volunteer
participant. As a TSC Team member you will live with a Thai
host and join the staff of a local health facility. Your
host will provide transport to and from the health facility
for you each day. You will be immersed in the mores of the
local culture by participating in daily activities with your
host and your project mentor or counterpart.
Each TSC team member will be assigned an English speaking
mentor or counterpart at the hospital or health facility.
Your mentor or counterpart will provide the orientation and
language ability necessary for you to be of service to the
community. The rapport you establish with the staff at the
local hospital or health clinic will provide lasting
friendships and memories.
TSC works through the Ministry of Health in Kanchanaburi. In
that capacity we provide team members to more than eight
hospitals and health clinics. At the hospitals each
volunteer participant will be assigned to a functional area consistent with their technical/academic abilities and
desires.
We seek health professionals, and students of medicine (to
include dental and pharmacology) who desire to make a
difference through service while broadening their horizons.
Medical professionals of all specialties are encouraged to
participate. If you don’t have 2 years for the Peace Corps
or 6 months for Doctors without Borders then come join us in
a tailored 2-3 week mission of service. Licensed physicians
and nurses are needed. While medical information and
technology are available through the internet, many
facilities lack the internet and ability to use it.
Traveling outside of the country for training and education
can be very expensive and many times impractical, or
economically not possible for the Thai staff. Licensed
doctors and nurses have an opportunity to impart their
education, training and skills to the Thai professionals who
are eager to learn.
Medical students - take a break from classroom studies and
seek credit for your rotation by serving in an international
health environment. Thai doctors that you work with will
provide evaluations and reports of student clinical
performance as required.
Pre med students shadow a Thai doctor or Thai medical staff.
Observe and experience all facets of International health
care. Observe Doctor Vichen as he delivers a baby or
conducts a sonogram to check the status of the baby. Watch
Doctor Pichai as he repairs a broken leg, caused by a
motorcycle accident. Sit with Doctor Lek, as she conducts
"sick call" and observe and be mentored in how to conduct
medical histories. Travel to a local clinic or home as
hospital doctors make their rounds of service treating and
serving patients.
Thailand has a form of socialized medicine called the 30
baht program. Patients pay a flat fee of 30 baht for
treatment at a local facility. Each hospital has its own
pharmacy and dispenses manufactured medicines as well as
preparing and making medicine on doctor orders. Each
hospital is augmented with a staff of Dental doctors and
massage therapists. Some hospitals and clinics use an
"holistic" approach for treatment. Pulmonary disease,
respiratory infections, gastric disorders, hypertension, and
diabetes are common maladies. Births, broken bones,
accidents, cuts, colds, flu, fever, infections and aging are
all common to both cultures-only the treatment may differ.
TSC Healthcare team members spend three days at a hospital
or clinic and two days teaching English at a local school.
All team members help Doctors, nurses and staff with their
English conversation, vocabulary, listening and, speaking as
they work together on a daily basis. Additionally, we ask
our team members to teach English for two hours each week to
the hospital or clinic staff when time and scheduling
permit.
